Jimmy Webb, that cornerstone of American Songwriting who wrote many famous songs such as “By The Time I Get To Phoenix”, “Up Up and Way”, “Wichita Lineman” and countless others of which I would redirect you do his website, also topped off his career by writing a book on songwriting back in the late 90’s called “Tunesmith – Inside the Art of Songwriting“. Finally finishing up this read over the weekend, all I can do is praise it highly by saying that it’s not only a book that “discusses” the art of songwriting in terms of different elements of construction, but also walks you through the mind of one of the greatest songwriters in America. Composers of any style or desire should take time to read it.
If Webb stopped there the treasure would be enormous, but he ends up going further. He walks you through his career, the business, the players, and yes the mistakes that everyone makes. He talks about writer blocks and reinventing oneself. Of winning and most importantly – what few ever discuss – losing too. The book is a great technical resource and also an inspiration for anyone who considers themselves “in the music business”.
