On this Saturday, after catching up on errands and exercise, I started in on notating down the opening measures, which turned into an exercise of relativity. Notating down the accompaniment – is it 4/4 with 8th notes; or is it 7/4 with quarters; or is it 3:2 8th notes in 4/4; or [...]

Timing
Back at the Helm

Trying to start the habit again of writing about whatever I am thinking about as it related to my own continual growth as a composer, or a virtual thinking one, I am back here at the old blog. I guess its been almost 2 years since I started this thing. Time really [...]

Changes
I think I’ve been avoiding writing again on this blog for a number of reasons: the aversion of committing to anything concrete and final regarding the changes to my own musical life; my growing disgust in some ways for the classical and contemporary music world; and maybe the fact that I no longer for some reason [...]

Piano up
Have to say, its good to hear the piano sounds again, if only briefly, as I took some time over the weekend (Sunday) to check over the sound system and finalize a few tweaks here and there. Nothing specifically interesting, but we are all setup and ready to go. One more week of house cleaning [...]
Rainy Weekend
A nice rainy weekend, and a quiet one. I spent time doodling on the piano and writing a bit. Listening to Rachmaninoff and downloading a few piano concertos. I haven’t yet found a good recording of the 3rd. The Agerich is a disaster. Don’t know why people rate this so highly…its rushed and melodramatic playing [...]
Composing Status Update #71
Composing actions become faded and unfocused to the point of blindness. This week, outside of a few dreams, I didn’t spend one ounce of time on composing. A fair amount of listening past, but constructive work was totally frozen. The day gig, and additional personal end of year tasks prevented me from doing anything. In [...]
Rushed Beyond Measure
Damn. I wanted to spend some time this morning continuing my quests in John Adam’s book here in this blog – specifically some of the things he was saying that I find interesting and helpful to a composer – specially me and my particular creativity problems of late. But, unfortunately I am in a terrific rush. Yesterday [...]
A Composer’s Silence
As I write this report this morning, it comes into my mind after watching a few too many YouTube interviews and reading a few too many autobio’s and memoirs, that composers, by and large talk too much about themselves in a way that is not verifiable or accurate or honest. Now, without going too in depth, I [...]
