It’s hard to believe that it’s been about 4 months since I’ve posted anything here. Time became a mixing pot of many life indecisions and choices, and when the settlement came, I was left with a few stories and very few answers. Nothing is ever concluded.
Over the course of the [...]

Craft Will Not Save You
photo credit: BrainOnFire Funny, this weekend I did some tremendous work – not to the usual path of righteousness, which is normally bent over graph paper or hell bent on making some vine of counterpoint symmetry work on 8 voices. Instead, I approached in a way I haven’t done in a while – that [...]

Composing Status Update #46
Carefully, I get up to pace, and at the same time struggle with choices – simple choices such as how to orchestrate this first statement in the opening – an exposition of a main octal set which makes up the work. Concerning the Mystery of A | B
Blunder check over the weekend found a few missing ties across measures. You wouldn’t think such a small item would cause such a difference, especially when you consider that there are 6 voices in this counterpoint, but guess what. It was big.
So, what do we have? B has a lot [...]
Composing Status Update #30
A mild revisit after some time to clear the ears to A and B this week. As I mentioned a few days ago, still undecided. In a twisted way, B holds my interest because…well…its twisted. Doesn’t start that way, but the middle becomes so…which adds 1) something grossly unique 2) more [...]
A | B ?
A or B? Back to listening after a hiatus and putting some distance between writing and decision making.
A is more positional. The changes are more solidified and it sounds more complete and mature.
B is more dynamic. The changes are more apparent in your face, and it sounds more fragmented and distorted. [...]
Composing Status Update #29
More indecision…more listening. A and B versions sound good in different ways. Both have potential splashes of harmonies that sound unique in the context of the counterpoint. Both have surprizes that are similar and also contrasting. So, its difficult to say which one is better suited for the needs of the [...]
Re-listen
Listening for the ideal…these two permutations. Still unsettled and undecided. The demand for energy is exhausting – 12 minutes each. The final movement will be a few minutes longer when I add in the caps. So, I can only do it for a short time in the evening…this evaluation. And [...]
